DR. JAMES P. GILLS: Today we have a distance in their vision that does not cause the glare and blur that many bifocal lenses did. This is called the Crystalens. This is called the third generation crystalline lens and it is a lens that has been improved upon and improved upon and improved upon. It’s interesting that it works in a way that is not exactly the way it was planned to work. But it works in a way where you have wave front changes that increase the amount of reading power for every lens and allows that person to see up close as well as at a distance. It allows a person with near vision to read a computer as well as a book up close. It may not make you see the fine print on a medicine bottle but it will allow you to live a life much more normally than you did prior to cataract surgery in most cases. These lenses may be one of the biggest advances we’ve had in cataract surgery in the last two decades. They are a lens that I would choose for myself and my family and I realize that there is cost associated with them but these lenses give clarity of vision both distance and near, getting the focus is important and sometimes we have to tweak these lenses but we want you to have a better quality of vision, have clarity of vision, and have better functional vision without the need of glasses. I think the answer at this stage is the crystalline lens.
