DR. RAYMOND T. AGIA: Mere luck. It was going to happen anyhow but someone in Miami, while treating patients for macular degeneration found out that they came to him and said, “Hey, we’re seeing better.” He started thinking about what these patients were going through. They were taking Avastin which is a drug used for colorectal cancer. At the same time he noted that the vision has improved. So he started thinking maybe the Avastin is helping patients with macular degeneration. It was an uproar in the retinal society because we said maybe finally we have a cure for macular degeneration. It is a not a cure yet but it is a process where we can slow down the disease and in some cases now we do have improvement of vision. They discovered that there is another medication from this same family. They named it Lucentis. Every one of the countries is using Lucentis because it does help patients who are deemed, again, hopeless and helpless. Now we do have—not a cure so far—but we do have a way to retard the disease, stop it, and many times improve the vision even. What is in the future? There are many, many research activities going on at the same time everywhere. Here, in Europe, in Japan, and the hope that one day they will be able to cure the disease for once and for all which is the number one cause of blindness in the Western Hemisphere.
