DR. RAYMOND T. AGIA: My name is Raymond Agia and I am an ophthalmologist specializing in disease of the retina. We have a success rate of over 90%. These are for retinal detachment which afflicts mostly elderly people. There are a lot of diseases that we can treat today that you couldn’t treat 20 years ago or ten years ago including macular hole. Macular hole is a common problem for the elderly over 65. More for women than for men at a nine to one ratio. We successfully close the holes in about 85% of the time from the first operation with very good visual results. We could not have done that without the vitrectomy technique. We do a lot of surgery also on macular pucker which is a wrinkle in the retina. This problem affects about 6% of patients over 65. Not all of them need surgery, few of them need surgery but we do treat them fairly successfully today.
