DR. JOHN T. LIVECCHI: One of the many things that an Oculoplastic Surgeon performs is we perform reconstructive surgery. Patients come in with malpositioned lids such as ectotrophies that I can go through a whole but the main ones are ectrotrophies. An ectotrophy is quite simply when you have an eyelid inverted. Intropy is just the opposite. These two conditions in themselves can damage the eye and they need to be corrected surgically. One of the most common procedures I perform other than blepharoplasty is tosis repair. What is tosis? Tosis is drooping of the upper eyelid and that usually occurs as we age. Now, you can be born with that as well but most of the time it is an aging process and most of the time the eye has to be lifted up so the patient can see properly.
