DR. JOHN T. LIVECCHI: Well one of the most common procedures performed here at St. Luke’s Cataract and Laser Institute in the department of ostuloplastics is what is called a blepharoplasty. Now that is a long word, many people can’t even pronounce it, but let me define exactly what a Blepharoplasty is. Let me first say that dermatocolasis is another word for baggy eyelids. Lepheroplasty is a procedure that corrects baggy eyelids or corrects dermatocolasis. It takes about ten minutes under my hand to do a functional blepharoplasty for the upper eyelids. Interestingly enough insurance pays for these procedures. Why? Because it obstructs vision and insurance companies don’t want us out there driving with vision that is obstructed. When I say obstructed I’m talking about 35-40% of your peripheral vision can be interfered with. We will put stitches in, you will get stitches. You may get a little black and blue, that always goes away. And we will not put you to sleep for this. It’s not necessary, it’s a local anesthetic. We give you a little sedation. The sedation relaxes you. You never have any pain throughout the surgery and the only restriction, really, is we don’t want you to get the stitches wet.
