St. Luke’s doctors help mentor B.E.S.T. students
Two ophthalmologists at St. Luke’s Cataract & Laser Institute are participating in a summer program that pairs health-care professionals with minority high school students who have shown an interest in a health career. Drs. Brian A. Phillpotts and Grace A. Levy-Clarke will allow students from the Brain Expansions Scholastic Training program (B.E.S.T.) to shadow them one day a week for five weeks as they treat patients at St. Luke’s. (more…)

Lifework Leadership Tampa Bay - Legacy Award
Dr. James P. Gills was honored as the Legacy Award recipient at the June 12, 2008 inaugural graduation of Lifework Leadership Tampa Bay, held at the University Club in Tampa. James P. Gills, Guest of Honor at the New England Ophthalmological Society Meeting
Dr. James P. Gills was the guest of honor at the 2008 New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS) Meeting on May 30th in Boston, MA. NEOS is a nonprofit group of more than 700 ophthalmologists (medical and surgical eye physicians) throughout New England. Their mission is to provide for the study and advancement of ophthalmology, including the education of their members. As guest of honor, Dr. Gills presented two lectures to the group on current concepts in ophthalmology.

James P. Gills, MD, recipient of the Philip M. Corboy Award for Distinguished Service to Ophthalmology
Dr. James P. Gills has been selected as the 2008 honoree for the Philip M. Corboy Award for Distinguished Service to Ophthalmology presented at the Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting on January 20, 2008 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort on the Island of Hawaii.
This award was established in honor of Philip M. Corboy, MD who served ophthalmology for fifty years as a clinician, teacher and innovator and is given to leaders in ophthalmology who have demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding skills in teaching, research, clinical work and publication. Dr. Gills was the unanimous choice of the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.

James P. Gills, MD, Recognized for Treatment Suggested 38 Years Ago
Dr. Gills received recognition for a treatment that he suggested almost thirty-eight years ago at the First Annual Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation Physician Education Conference held at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute. Once criticized by the medical community because the idea was new, it is now the accepted form of therapy at the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation in Boston and the standard of care at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Cambridge.
